I came across this article in the Austin American Statesman that does a good job of giving an overview of what some folks who call themselves "emergent" christians are doing in regards to church. Check it out.

I liked this article. It gives a good overview of what the emerging movement is trying to do, and it is great to see people making these sacrifices to carry out what they think God is telling them. However, it is far, far more demanding than conventional church, and I ask myself if there are many Christians who are prepared to make such sacrifices. Even non-clergy who see Jesus in this un-cluttered way, are then going to have to give a lot of time, persistance and effort to be the sort of disciple to make this work. How many regular Christians prepared to do this? Conventional church is very contained. Emerging church is creative, flexible and demanding.
Hi Margaret,
Thanks for your comment. I think you make a good point. What the folks in the article are doing is more demanding than what is expected in a conventional church. I think one of the things that is distinctive about the emerging church is the desire go beyond being a consumer of church, religion, etc. and to be a co-creator of the community. It's definitely more demanding but ultimately, I think, more rewarding.
